I had the japanese-style twin room which was functional and new-fashioned. It was nice to find a microwave, an electric kettle, and a fridge.

Favourable, incredible location in Kyoto, so close to the Gion / Pontocho and city center and a quiet, residential area. Fine and outstanding meals.

The room we booked was big size and functional, with a refreshing cool drink and tea cups with Japanese tea, for instance.

Can’t fault the property in any way.

The room was reasonably sized and well heated with a western bathroom. The location was central, fantastic in the local neighborhood.

ryokan shimizu truly surpassed our expectations. from the friendly staff to the superb room and hot japanese bath, everything was perfect. their attention to detail and warm hospitality made us feel at home. staying here was definitely a highlight of our trip to kyoto.

Very friendly and helpful staff, all with good English. They were keen to share local tips (ie. a One-day market that was on). On-site bike rental was also a great way to see the local sights.

Bathrooms were clean and functional but very cramped by western standards!

The helpful staff were ready to help in every way. The room was brand-new and well-appointed with private bathroom inside and the overall experience was very very good. The service was absolutely EXCELLENT.

Functional, decent sized room with a personal bathroom and a shower, hair dryers, and terry bath robes. Favourable and really handy location, easy walk to everywhere. Again, walking distance to a Jōdo Shinshū Buddhist temple.

We loved the warm and welcoming atmosphere at this ryokan. The owners went above and beyond to make us comfortable, providing warming pads and even a personal memory picture. The room was beautifully calming and the futon with an extra mattress was very comfortable. The private bath/sento was a fantastic addition and a great first experience. The delicious breakfast and the overall feeling of staying at a family place made our stay even more special.

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Ryokan Shimizu. The location was perfect, bike rental was so useful to go out and explore Kyoto, but most of all the staff were so friendly and offered free Japanese culture experiences where we tried on traditional Japanese outfits, did some Japanese calligraphy and had a quick language lesson!

The staff and service was excellent. Very interesting neighbourhood. Plenty of room, bathroom excellent for a Westener.

A bit hot with a duvet without turning the air con down to 18. Had to just use the sheet top.

Our air conditioned room was reasonably priced and bed was super. The hotel's location was residential, close to all public transportation options to get there. And it was also short walk to the main station and subway stations, and the Gion / Pontocho for a night out.
